Solo Recordings - DJ Fun on KVRX, Spring 1997
November 29th, 2007 Music

I was a volunteer DJ at KVRX, the student-run station at the University of Texas at Austin, for 3 years while in college. I loved my time there and having a “free form” DJ show was one of the most fun experiences I’ve ever had. This album comes from my last full year at the station. During the course of my weekly 2-hour show, I liked to improvise at various times during the night. I’d try to do it twice a show, just use all of the devices available to me (2 turn tables, 2 CD decks & sometimes a cassette deck) and spontaneously compose for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes it was crap and sometimes I hit upon some really interesting stuff. That was the fun of it; it was totally unplanned and creative as hell. And FUN.

I’d usually start off with some kind of repetitive beat. Techno or Hip Hop worked best. After that, everything was fair game. I played operas backwards, used sound effect CDs (”Great Speeches” was my favorite, as you’ll hear), spun old children’s records and generally combined things that were never meant to be. Ideally I’d flow from the outro of one “proper” song and after I’d had my fill of improv I’d segue into another “proper” song.

Even though I had a show once a week, what I have here is all that I recorded. Since it was up to me to record my own shows, I was at the mercy of my own ability to afford blank tapes to record with. Obviously if I would have planned better, then I would’ve recorded every show. Ah well.

The main page of the website lists all contents under my copyright. All of the individual pieces of music on these songs are obviously owned by someone else. For the most part, I do have play lists of everything I used, so I can give proper credit. A few of them I have no idea about all of the parts. What it comes down to is this, these recordings are mine, but the individual parts are not. If you are an owner of any of these and you own the copyright for them, I will be happy to remove what you don’t authorize, just let me know. This material is absolutely not for sale (which is why I’m giving it away free) and I’m really just presenting it to get it out there.

As for the listing of “Album # 0.5″, I realize it might be viewed as pretentious, but it’s really named so because I consider it a “James Hines” album, but not quite my First Official Album. Make sense? Good! I hope you dig it.
