Yes, this is a novelty CD…and it’s pretty damn hilarious. In the same way that Weird Al turns metal songs into polkas, these guys turn classic rock staples into really silly, death-by-Moog, instrumentals. Moog synths have a sound all their own and it’s one that most people (esp. in 2002) would call Cheesy. They stay pretty faithful to the originals, only the texture and attitude of the music is different.
Each song starts to get old by the time it’s over, but then the next one starts up and you start laughing all over again. The melody line of Cat Scratch Fever is great; it kills me how funny this is! The thing I like about this album is that it really takes all the pomp and ego out of these songs and makes them into the silly pop songs they truly are.
To listen to this all the way through is a chore, and I don’t put in on a weekly basis, but in small doses it’s great. Use it to put on a mix CD for someone, or put in on in a multi-disc changer for potential party music. I think my favorite may be Boston’s More Than a Feeling, which they manage to turn into a techno song! But really, they’re all good and if this doesn’t make you laugh then you’re dead.
