It’s kinda strange on my feelings for this. At times I really just fall into it and love most of these songs and other times I just think how cheesy and plain this stuff is. I think the songs are mostly good, but the thing that’s most appealing about the Eagles are the harmony vocals. Even on songs that are only OK (Take it to the Limit), the vocals make you want to hear them over and over. And plus I know all the songs like the back of my hand that it often doesn’t bother me to hear them. Yes, it bothers the HELL out of me to sit through Witchy Woman and One of These Nights (I actually did manage to sit through both of them for this). I’ve never understood the attraction to Witchy Woman. To me it’s a generic, poorly written song. It’s so generic and lifeless it’s just boring. And One of These Nights is just awful white disco. Very bad Bee Gees rip-off…and to make it worse they’re actually *whiter* than the Bee Gees!
This album is only just over 40 minutes long, so it’s awfully short by today’s standards. I still wonder why both Greatest Hits are in print and Elektra just hasn’t issued an 80-minute single “Best Of”. I’d say at any given time I only feel like listening to half of these songs. Of course I’ll ALWAYS listen to Desperado; that’s an excellent song. Yeah, all these songs are mainstays on classic rock radio, and most people who remotely like the Eagles would be happy with this, but I don’t feel some massive love for this album. Or band, really. I figured out why I don’t put this in too often: it’s really just kinda plain.
