David Coverdale always wanted to be Robert Plant, so it’s really natural that this collaboration would happen. The public had pretty much forgotten about Jimmy Page as a ‘current’ guitarist by this point, but this album reaffirmed his status in the world of Rock Guitar (which he was one of the inventors of). Page’s guitar is all over this album; he sounds really great on it.
Man, this album was all over the radio back in ’93. I remember these guys were going to tour but it got canceled because (what I heard anyway) the promoter thought that they couldn’t go out and headline on their own. I had tickets for like a day or so. Dammit, it would’ve been so great. At least I was redeemed and got to see Page and Plant a few years later.
Surprisingly this album still holds up after 9 years. OK, not all of it, and you just have to accept the fact that this is Led Zep Jr., without the equally-as-amazing Jones and Bonham (yeah, and Plant too). The tracks listed above as skippers are pretty lame, but except for those, this album is actually good. Coverdale sings his ass off, and Page just rips it up. The rest of the band plays along just fine. If you’re a Zep fan and you haven’t got this yet, I’d suggest giving it a try. It’s absolutely NOT Led Zeppelin, or even close to their quality of music, but it’s still a good CD, and something I like to put in on occasion.
