Progress Report 1-10-08
January 10th, 2008 under blog. [ Comments: none ]

I’ve been working on the site, but I just haven’t done any “updates” in a couple of weeks.  I’m up through the F’s in reposting the album reviews & I also imported all of my old Livejournals.  The crappy thing about this importation is that none of the comments transferred over.  That sucks, and is super lame, but I can’t control that.  The old site will exist as an archive, but unless you want to try to find the comments, all of the blogs I’ve written are here.  As you can see by looking at the “Archives” on the left side, between the blogs and reviews there’s a lot of stuff here.  It grows daily.

Album reviews I’ve posted:

Album of the Year - 2007
January 1st, 2008 under blog. [ Comments: 1 ]

Is it lame to do these things?  It’s overdone, sure, but I like the idea of rewarding the “best” so-and-so for the past year.  When I started pondering this back at the beginning of December, there wasn’t anything that really jumped out at me without looking at my list (finding the 2007’s in iTunes).  So I looked through the list and it wasn’t too difficult to pick the right one.

Norah Jones - Not Too Late

I’ll do the full review at some point in the future, but what I really love about this album is how subdued it is.   It’s not an album that yells at you how great it is, you have to actively seek it out and be willing to get into that headspace.  It’s the first album she’s done that’s all original compositions and there are some great ones on here: The Sun Doesn’t Like You & Wish I Could are the ones that immediately pop out at me.  There’s a great feel to this album, it’s very “Norah and her band in the living room”.

There were some other great albums that came out in 2007 :  the Shades of Winter EP, Don deLeaumont’s …Said the Firefly to the Hurricane, Robert Fripp’s Glass & Breath, Megadeth’s United Abominations & Bebel Gilberto’s Momento and 1 particular not-so-great one: Rush’s Snakes & Arrows.  No offense to my friends, but Norah beats you this year.

Go here to see the full list, 1956 - 2007.

Happy New Year everyone!
