Hi!
Just thought I’d update on various Protean Mean (the band, if you forgot) arisings. Last night Jenn and I had a photo shoot at an old Plantation in Hillsborough. Her husband Eric took the pics and just judging by the environment (and how great we looked) they should look pretty good. I’ll get to see them at practice on Thursday. Hopefully these photos will suffice for now so that we won’t have to worry about it anymore.
At our brunch on Sunday I played for Jenn, Eric & Julie a mix of our first song that will go up on the myspace site. They were very pleased, but they agreed with me that the bass was a bit muddy so I’ll have to re-record that, probably today. The other two songs we’re planning on putting up really just need vocals and then after the mix they’ll be ready for public consumption. Like last week, Thursday’s practice will be dedicated to recording vocals…as I can do all of the rest of it on my own time.
Every small step we take gets me more and more excited about it all. I can’t wait for people to hear what we sound like, even if it’s just in an mp3 for now.

saw this report on TV last night:
http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/06/22/060622055545.07o4imol.html
chemical weapons found in Iraq.
So, after seeing the report last night I searched around the various news websites this morning (a few minutes ago) to see if they had any reports on it. I looked at cnn, msnbc, abc news, cbs news, new york times, washington post, npr, moveon.org (like they’d ever have a story about it!)…
…
and none of them had even a mention of it. Is it not news? Is it not important? Does it matter that chemical weapons were found in Iraq? According to the report they had deteriorated (since they are pre-1991 after all), but they still could be deadly if put in the proper hands. And their existence was lied about.
Someone please explain to me why this is not news…here at 8:12 EST in the morning.

No Mavs |

Wow. They choked. Bad. That NBA finals for the Mavs will probably go down as the biggest choke in the sport’s history. Maybe any sport, who knows. Just, wow.
So why did they lose? Because Miami played better and deserved to win, simple as that. If you miss as many baskets as the Mavs did then you don’t deserve to win. Miami made their baskets, the Mavs missed theirs.
I still don’t like Miami, or O’Neal, and I still stand by what I said about the refereeing in Game 5. But whatever the refs do or don’t do, if you can’t perform the fundamentals of basketball (putting that orange round thing through the basket) then it doesn’t matter.
I hope this will motivate the team in the offseason to practice more on what matters and hopefully they can get back to the finals next year. And win it.
Here’s the first one for next year:
Go Mavs.

I love hockey/media bias |

Oh that game last night was great! I’m glad the Hurricanes won. The people of this area really deserve it. It’s great to see the support that hockey gets from the fans here. Did you hear/see that place last night? Loud and crazy, as hockey fans should be. Standing up the whole time. Awesome. It really was a great game, and series. Both teams played their butts off. And as good as Edmonton is, and they definitely are, Cam Ward is better. He made some fantastic saves last night.
OK, so, I have to gripe about this again. Pulling the goalie NEVER works. OK, maybe a couple of times that I haven’t seen has it actually worked, but usually…no. It’s such a desperation move. Of course, it can backfire, as it did last night with Edmonton. Short-handed goal on an empty net. D’oh!
Note to all hockey coaches out there: pulling the goalie doesn’t work and it makes you look stupid and desperate.
Huzzah! Hurricanes!
I’m happy that the finals were as good as they were; I think the sport of hockey really needed games that exciting coming off last year. I really hope a lot of people outside of Edmonton and the Triangle watched the game, because it was really exciting.
So, that means we now of 2 games (potentially…) of good stuff until all good sport is gone away until the fall.
The Mavericks. I hope that they only have to play Miami tonight, and don’t have to worry about playing against the refs too like they did on Sunday. That is the most rediculous stuff I’ve ever seen. Maybe growing up in Dallas and seeing the grassy knoll more times than I can count has made me more conspiracy-minded. It’s always a possibility, I’ll give you that. I just don’t think in this situation it’s too far off the mark. The refs were *clearly* showing favortism. The league wants Miami to win. The media wants Miami to win. East-Coasters think everyone else is smoking crack when they talk about an “East-Coast Media Bias”, but IT’S TRUE! Every game I hear so much talk from the announcers about Miami. *Everything* is based around Miami…what Miami needs to do to get the lead, what Miami needs to do to keep the lead, how O’Neal needs to make these free-throws, how Wade is the 2nd Coming Of Jordan (what happened to LaBron??). I swear, it really makes me sick. All 5 games the announcers have only talked about what Miami needs to do to win. They come just [T___H___I___S] short of saying, “Yes! and we, uh, Miami wins game 5!!” East-Coast Media Bias exists. As does NBA favortism. Is it any wonder who the NBA wants to win? I think it’s obvious. The NBA loves stars. The announcers REALLY love stars. It’s so annoying the way the annoucers talk about O’Neal and Wade. The entire team to them is O’Neal, Wade, and some other people. Makes me sick.
I said it last time, but I do not like Shaquille O’Neal. I think it’s absolutely scummy how he’ll elbow an opposing player in the face on every single play. But oh, he’s just that tall! Wrong, he knows exactly what he’s doing and he NEVER gets called on it. That’s why he does it - because he’s been a superstar since he was with Orlando and the league lets him get away with it. He’s a star, he’s untouchable.
I think it’s really lame that the Mavs have to just stupidly foul him all the time too. This “Hack-a-Shaq” stuff is lame. It’s like purposely and repeatedly walking batters in baseball. Just don’t let him get near the rim. Easier said than done, right? Still, I think it’s lame that they do it. “Make him earn the points”…whatever. It would all be a moot point if he was a good free-throw shooter.
Whatever.
All I know is that Dallas had better win tonight, or the fans in Dallas will NOT let them live this down. If Miami wins in Dallas without the refs’ assistance, then they deserve it. I know all sports have their stars, and our culture really is star-centered, but I think it’s just magnified so greatly in pro basketball. That’s why NCAA hoops is still so much better to watch - you don’t have biased refs and you don’t have the league wanting one team to win over the other.
So yeah, there are all my ‘grassy knoll’ theories of the day.
Go Mavs.

I’ve been watching more TV than I should recently. I guess that’s what happens when you get cable. I haven’t had cable since 2001 and now that we have it again, Julie and I are naturally watching more. I love the History Channel, which is one I’ve never had before. Food Network usually gets the most viewing time in our house, which is fine because I’d much rather Julie be addicted to that channel than HGTV which was her previous addiction.
Besides History, I’m in a wonderful “sports zone” right now. NBA finals and Stanley Cup finals at the same time, alternating nights. How great is that? Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Saturday night was cool. It sucks that the Hurricanes didn’t win (not that I really care too much, as the Stars are my team, but I definitely don’t hate the ‘Canes and I want them to win), but I’m glad Edmonton has decided to make a series of it. They played like maniacs on Saturday. I love seeing hockey that fast-paced. It’s a good thing the ‘Canes goalie is as good as he is. He made some awesome saves. I know that Carolina will win, I think they’re the better team, and I can’t wait to watch that final game.
And then, we have the Dallas Mavericks. First time in the finals, and up 2 games to none. Ha ha, stupid Miami. I just LOVE seeing Shaq get it handed to him. I’ve never liked the guy, regardless of his skills on the court. Just one of those players I never liked. The city of Dallas is definitely basketball crazy right now. The place has been crazy for the Mavs the past 4 or 5 years so I can only imagine how everyone is handling being up 2-0.
I really love the playoffs and especially finals of both of these sports. I love hockey anyway, but as for basketball in general…eh, not so much. I support the Mavs, but regular season basketball is pretty boring. As is regular season baseball (and sometimes, *all* baseball). With basketball I love watching the NCAA tournament and the NBA finals. That’s great sport. The rest of the time? Unless it’s the Longhorns or the Mavericks, I could care less. I do think they play too many games (esp. baseball), to the point where so many are just meaningless. Do all the playoff games need to be best of 7 series? No, the early rounds could be decided in 3. I know it’s all about revenue though, I’m not kidding myself.
That is why I will always prefer football (one of many reasons): all the games matter, esp. in college. If you lose a game in college footbal, there’s very little chance you can play for a national championship. In the pro playoffs and the superbowl, you get one change. All or nothing. You have to bring your full game.
So yeah, I’m a really happy sports fan this time of year. And then in about a week…whoosh, nothing but boring baseball until football starts up in September. Yay baseball!
One of the funniest things I’ve seen on TV recently is a promo on ABC for an upcoming show called “Master of Champions”. If you’ve seen it then you’ll know how rediculous it is. And that name is horrible. If you don’t know, it seems to be some sort of competition in really strange “sports”, like high speed semi parallel parking (no, I’m serious) and archery with your feet while doing some funky yoga pose. Rediculous, like I said.
I guess they really put the crap shows on in the summer.
