Stronger album than most, I actually debated about selling this. The energy is obviously a lot higher on this, which makes some mediocre songs good. The version of Creatures of the Night is awesome and some other ones I can’t remember right now are too. But as a whole, it’s not in the same league as I and II and should have honestly been given a different name. It’s an OK album, some enjoyable moments on here.

This was actually my first KISS album I bought and one of the first CDs I ever owned. I thought Unholy was a cool and heavy track so I went for it. For a long time I used to like this, but after a while, all the sexual songs just got really old. Why do men who are almost or already in their 50′s (KISS, AC/DC, Rolling Stones, etc. etc.) still write stupid, immature sexual songs? I don’t get it. Oh yeah, it’s cuz they want the 22 year olds to think they’re still sexy! Gag. Me.
All things considered, this album is probably their best since 1976. Has a few good songs, but also some bad ones. It’s not essential at all, that’s why I sold it.

Released: 1988
I used to have this, it’s got the most popular 70′s songs and like 6 or so from the 80′s plus 2 new p.o.s. ones. Only if you’re desperate for another KISS compilation.

Kiss – Solo Albums (Ace Frehley) |

Of the 4 solo Kiss albums I only had Ace’s, which was about half good. I’ve heard bits and pieces of the rest and they are all HORRIBLE! Don’t be duped. Ace’s produced some good songs, but it’s still not worth holding on to. And besides, if you don’t hear these songs you’re life won’t be worthless. A rule I stick with for KISS is just to avoid all KISS material after Double Platinum. Like the plague.

Released: 1978
Yes, this is the one I say you should get, but then I went and sold it. The truth is, if you’re not going to get any other KISS albums besides the good ones (KISS, Alive, Destroyer, Alive 2), then this covers in the missing areas. If you go ahead and buy the rest of the studio albums from this ‘classic’ period, then this is useless (unless you REALLY want that disco version of Strutter!!). I made a tape of the good songs that were on the CDs I wanted to sell. But this is a good thing to have if you’re not going any further with your KISS collection. It’s certainly the best overview from this classic ’74 – ’78 period.

More of the same, some good some filler. Except from this point on, the filler gets a LOT worse with each album. Just get Double Platinum and you’ll have this one covered.

Released: 1975
Same thing as Hotter Than Hell, some good stuff, some filler. Double Platinum will get you most of the good songs of this EXCEPT for Love Her All I Can which is a great song. It’s one of my favorite KISS songs and I don’t think it’s available on any other album except for this one. Maybe it’s on the boxset, I have no idea. I just taped the song and sold the album anyway, overall it’s only OK.

I used to own this, it’s not a bad album, but it suffers from the same disease that 90% of KISS albums have…that there are maybe 5-6 ‘good’ songs and the rest is filler. You can get the main good songs from this by getting Double Platinum.

Dream Theater – Octavarium |

Released: 2005
Dream Theater’s 8th studio album, thus the title. So, I actually have heard this whole thing (used to own it, but sold it) and I really am not impressed. Only really 1, maybe 2, of the songs that I like; the rest are forgettable. To tell you the truth, I haven’t been too terribly impressed with their output since Jordan Rudess joined. Maybe a new keyboardist shouldn’t matter, but he simply wanks too much. WAY too much. I’m not too thrilled on prog keyboardists in the first place, but I really don’t like his playing in context of the band. Here and there, yeah, there’s good stuff, but in general it seems like he doesn’t know what else to do in a prog band, so he wanks. The songwriting isn’t too spectacular on this and it really seems like I’ve heard it all before. They just don’t do anything fresh or new anymore. Or if they do, it’s just a small passage in a song. But on the whole, they haven’t done much new *musically* in a few years. I think in terms of this album, unless you’re an ultra hard-core DT fan (and loved the last few albums) then you should avoid this one. They’ve become redundant, which is something a “progressive” band shouldn’t do.

Dream Theater – When Dream and Day Unite |

Released: 1989
This album outright sucks. I love Dream Theater, but this thing really bites. Lemme correct that; The music is quite cool (though a bit rough), but the vocals are some of the worst you’ll ever hear. The “singer’s” name is either Charlie Dominics or Charlie Dominici, depending on which page of the CD booklet you’re looking at. And I know that since ‘s’ and ‘i’ are NOT close on a keyboard, then whoever typed up the notes for the CD is dumb as bricks and doesn’t even know the name of the lead singer of the group.
I bought this thinking it would be cool, but it’s just horrible. The guy can’t sing and therefore completely ruins the album, one that would otherwise be pretty good. The only song worth listening to is the instrumental, Ytse Jam, which is way cool. Other than that, please don’t ever think about buying this. Awful.
