A note on the album reviews for 1/1/03…
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Hey, if you come across this page and notice that all of these were done on 1/1/03, but some of the albums were released after that date…these reviews are all albums I *used* to own but sold back or got rid of.  These are just general impressions of the album and I chose this date as a “generic” date as I didn’t do anything else website-related on 1/1/03.  FYI.

Jimmy Buffett - Rancho Deluxe soundtrack
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 1975

I bought this thinking it would be cool, but it’s not.  It’s a short album anyway, but the amount of ‘real’ substance is very small.  The only real substance is 1 damn song, a remake of Livingston Saturday Night, with some alternate ‘offensive’ lyrics.  I like the other version a lot better.  So, besides that, all that’s on here is dialog tracks from the movie (which aren’t the least bit funny) and half-assed musical interludes that are all very short.  The whole album is bad 70’s country and it sickened me to listen to it.  So I returned it saying it was defective and put the credit to something much better.  Thankfully all the Ryko soundtracks (including Rancho Deluxe) are now out of print so you won’t happen to run across this unless you actively seek it out.  Even if you are a serious Parrot(t)head like I am, I strongly advise staying away from this dreck.  Horrible.

Anthrax - Live: The Island Years
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 1994

I used to have this one, but I sold it.  It was OK.  Nothing to really get terribly excited about, just an obligatory live album.  They didn’t have a choice in the matter, and you can tell there’s really no effort from the band in releasing this.  For completists only.

Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 1992

Maybe someday I’ll do a full review of this album, but for now it’s just an overview. Over the course of a year I borrowed all of Tori’s albums from my sister and listened through them in order. For this one I wasn’t thinking about this website, so I deleted the tracks from my ipod that I didn’t care for. So yeah, maybe someday I’ll do the full thing with a grade.

I agree with the general consensus (her wikipedia page, All Music Guide) that this is a good place to start if you have an interest in her music. It’s her first album and in a way it’s a pure example of what she’s about. Of course she’s grown considerably in the years since this album, but as an example of the musician “Tori Amos”, this is a good starting point. Crucify, the opening track, is possibly the best track of this album. Cool song and a great “first track” for her recording career. Precious Things is another standout track that I never get tired of hearing. Both the songwriting and musicianship on this album are impressive on the whole. One thing that I really like about Tori’s albums is that you can get into the music or the lyrics (or both) and you’ll find plenty that’s rewarding.

I do have to say, though, that it’s kinda difficult to sit through a whole album for me. I think most of her albums are too long and I start to get bored after a while. I remember this one being the same way. Still, I think I’m an oddball in that regard. It seems that most people either really love her music, or absolutely despise it.

The tracks I decided to keep are: Crucify, Silent All These Years, Precious Things, Happy Phantom & Tear in Your Hand. If you’re interested in her music, give it a shot.

Tori Amos - Strange Little Girls
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 2001

I think this is a really interesting album and she pulls out some very odd choices of covers here (it’s all covers, by the way).  For me, though, “interesting” doesn’t always translate into something I want to listen to all the time.  It’s sort of like, “wow, that’s crazy what she did with *that* song!”.  Cool rearrangements of tracks like Depeche Mode’s Enjoy the Silence, Slayer’s Raining Blood & Eminem’s ‘97 Bonnie & Clyde.  Then we have Tori doing an awful version of an awful song, Neil Young’s Heart of Gold.  For all of the “strange” things she does with the tracks, nothing from this album stands up to repeated listens except her version of Tom Waits’ Time.  Just Tori and her piano, no weird singing, no techno, no guitar work from Adrian Belew (who kicks ass all over this album) - it’s just totally simple and a proper way of doing this great song.  The rest of the album…meh, I don’t need to hear it anymore.  I love the version of Time, though.

Rush - Archives
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 1978

This has been out of print since the late 70’s, but copies are still floating around.  It’s only somewhat useful if you’re a super hardcore collector-type Rush fan.  All that’s on here is the first 3 albums.  No different mixes, no different tracks, nothing different.  Don’t bother.

Kiss - Kiss My Ass
January 1st, 2003 under Album Reviews. [ Comments: none ]

Released: 1994

The Officially Sanctioned KISS Tribute Album with all money going to Gene.   About half of the songs I really liked, the other half caused me pain.   Anthrax’s She is great, Mighty Mighty Bosstones’ Detroit Rock City is incredible and there are some other ones that really rock.  When it came time to sell most of my KISS collection, I wondered, do I really need this?  No, I didn’t.
